COVERCHORD Visits the Traditional 'Yamanaka Lacquerware' Workshop of Gato Mikio Shoten

To celebrate Japan Traditional Craft Week 2023, COVERCHORD headed over to the workshop of Gato Mikio Shoten to have a look around and see how their pieces are crafted.

Founded in 1908, Gato Mikio Shoten pays respect to traditional techniques that have been passed down through four generations of the family while incorporating modern interpretations of artisanal products and reinventing the image of traditional ‘lacquerware’. During its visit to their workshop, COVERCHORD noted “What we glimpsed at the manufacturing site, which has a dignified atmosphere, is the reverence for traditional techniques and the pride that goes into preserving them.”
