Mountain Research Autumn/Winter '18
In what is effectively a fusion of two unlikely partners, Kobayashi Setsumasa’s Mountain Research presents an AW18 range that masterfully infuses mountaineering elements into the aggressive stylings of the punk subculture. Contrast plays a huge role in the overall theme, opting for an all-black body that defines a clear border with its hits of white print along many of the offerings.
Dubbed “Les Montagnards” — a fitting choice of term that can be roughly translated to “mountain dwellers” — the highly technical label presents a minimal lookbook to allow for its garments to shine alongside a stark red bouquet. Many of the styles we’ve come to expect make a return, adding into the mix a series of subtle ponchos, vests, and parkas that boast the brand’s characteristic utilitarianism. More contemporary options can be found in the form of polo shirts, berets, hoodies, and graphic tees while motocross pants, leather jerkins, and balaclavas express this adherence to anarchy. Embellishing a few of its pieces with typography that aligns with the overarching concept, the brand states boldly “EVERYTHING FOR THE FREEDOM.” Playful in their approach, the Japanese brand has surely set itself up for a wave of “anarcho mountaineers.”
