visvim Gives Us a Detailed Look at Their Handiworks Techniques for AW19
visvim is synonymous with painstaking attention to detail and unparalleled quality in terms of design, textiles, and construction. Their latest Product Introspection series showcases the effort and craft mastery by delving into the handiwork utilized for patterns, fabrics, and accessories in their Autumn/Winter '19 collection.
The “PEERLESS” motif lives on in the AW19 season with original stampwork impressed on hand-woven red striped fabrics and cotton shirts. The stamps were developed specifically for visvim by craftsmen in Kyoto that are reminiscent of vintage stamping tools in designer Hiroki Nakamura's personal archive collection. Though the act of stamping seems arbitrary, each letter is individually and meticulously stamped, and a shirt with seventeen imprints on each side must be stamped a total of thirty-four times. On the accessory side, badge silverwork requires a 5-step process over a 3 hour time span for each badge that is ended with a final polish. Hand-knit fabrics are another examples of a well-kept tradition and a renewed appreciation for folk art. Mrs. Akie Yanai, a 48 year knitting veteran, describes the greatest challenge is reaching the ideal softness and dimensions with a complete product. Yet there is no machinery or mass-production that can meet the knowledge and expertise of hand-knitting.
