Makayla Wray Reinterprets Classic Militaria Alongside Alpha Industries
As sustainable as they are forwardly unique, Makayla Wray’s designs frequently employ a host of militaristic fabrics, often taking from vintage or surplus to realize a vision far distinct from the armed forces they stem from. Now, in likely celebration of New York Fashion week, the designer is dressing up a drove of Alpha Industries staples passed the point of recognizability.
Interwoven throughout the range is a strong sense of utility: no piece standing on its own in terms of hardware-enhanced embellishments or the well-needed compartment. Blood Chit MA-1s -- with American flag prints flipped outward for a full display -- are given an intense rebuild from the ground up as their elastic hems are removed for a lengthened coat-like aesthetic and hoods are attached with a split cocoon shape. Elsewhere, more standard bombers find place reversed to reveal its vibrant orange lining, with further representation ostensibly hiding amongst a vast array of different fabrics in the accompanying tote bag and bucket hat. This aggressive patchwork motif transitions over to the noragi-styled overshirt whose exterior arrives replete with distressing, discolorations, and a host of battling textures. Vests repurposed from adjacent garments add off-center zippers and pockets to its side, leather trousers accentuate with a draped bib down their front, and extreme weather parkas size up to an enveloping degree.
