KOZABURO Spring/Summer '21
Presented digitally in both 2D and 3D formats, KOZABURO’s SS21 collection was a multi-part experience that conveyed designer Kozaburo Akasaka’s perspective through an intimate tour of both his Brooklyn studio as well as his upcoming works.
Born from the global pandemic, the range strikes a balance akin to the Japanese concept “en-yu,” an idea that refers to our state as individuals acting in harmony with one another. This quickly turns into a presentation more eccentric as Akasaka begins to think of outer space and launching both onward and upward.
And though overtly achieved through playful, near dissonant imagery and styling, this theme is better realized by way of the label’s garments, a curation that leans towards both leisure and retro futurism all at the same time. Pajama reminiscent sets, for example, are imbued with a “galactic camo” print, turning their more simply-constructed frames into astronautical displays. Uniforms then further expand this idea of “comfort” not through loose cuts but through ease of pairing and the innate function of Tyvek fabrics. Elsewhere, “craft remains” as signature 3-D bootcut jeans, hand-twisted shibori shirts, and much more refine a range of standouts vast in size.
