In some instances, collaborations can water down the substance of what is being produced but with these entities, the identity of the garments is carried over without losing touch; if anything, it elevates it to another realm.
For Spring/Summer ‘22, Manchester-based independent retailer, This Thing of Ours, home to some of the most sought after labels like Goldwin Japan, CCP and Anglan, has developed a capsule collection alongside Mackintosh: a British heritage outerwear manufacturer who needs little to no introduction. Mackintosh is renowned for producing for the likes of A-COLD-WALL*, Nigel Cabourn and Junya Watanabe COMME des GARÇONS MAN.
Both operating out of Northern England, This Thing of Ours hails a mere 40 miles from Mackintosh’s Nelson site making this a celebration of British manufacturing and forward-thinking design, both inherent aspects of their identities and present throughout the design of the garments.
The pair has devised a concise array of products across outerwear and headwear, including the Mistbreaker Jacket, PrimaLoft® Quilted Jacket and Reversible Boonie Hat. Developed over the course of a year, the team at Thing of Ours dug through the Mackintosh archive and discovered some outerwear silhouettes they wanted to put their unique twist on whilst retaining elements of Mackintosh’s heritage. This gave way to the use of futuristic Dyneema fabrications - one of the strongest man made fibers on Earth with an abundance of technical characteristics - that are indicative of the retailer alongside Mackintosh-beige nylon constructions that nod to the original Mac coat.
