Dohee Kim Reimagines the New Balance U509 Using A Highly Unique Ice-Dyeing Process
Dohee Kim has unveiled his first project with New Balance, taking on the latter’s U509 silhouette, often overlooked in favour of other popular styles from the American footwear label.
Best known for his work with the experimental label XLIM, which constantly explores textile and dyeing methods, Dohee Kim has applied this methodology to New Balance’s U509 style. The upper is constructed using a blend of materials to create a texturally enriching experience, further heightened by Kim’s use of ice-dyeing to achieve an irregular and inconsistent finish on the U509. This unconventional method revolves around applying ice cubes to the trainer, sprinkling powder on top and letting the melting process dictate how the dye applies itself. There appears to be three main colourways of the U509: plum, navy or brown, which vary in tone from pair to pair due to the dyeing.
Additionally, the New Balance U509 is joined by a concise apparel offering, which puts a twist on classic sportswear pieces, from hooded sweatshirts and sweatpants to crewneck tees and vests. These are approached similarly to the trainers, achieving a spray-painted effect.
