Text Spring/Summer '20
The young yet ambitious Tokyo-based label Text, after releasing their inaugural collection only months ago, maintains trajectory as they take their very first steps into the Spring/Summer season -- a milestone in and of itself.
Fittingly, speech bubbles lend insight into both artistic direction as well as the pieces themselves, no look standing without a poetic snippet of ambiance. Either sincere doses of reality or simple ramblings of a personal fashion, the entire set of immersive strings only further elevates the garments to which they correspond: a vast assortment that follows, as the brand puts it, a “farm-to-table” mentality.
Designer Shunsuke Ishikawa — who played a leading role in both MARKA and MARKAWARE — is painstakingly dedicated to the craft itself, putting utmost importance on every part of the process -- sourcing, material production, and design -- with the fruits of his labor being constructed of a proprietary 100% alpaca or even a host of denims, knits, and gabardine cottons. The latter of which, widespread throughout, is one of the most frequently employed, outfitting two-pocket shirts and classic overcoats with selvedge detailing alongside. Trenches in rust tones and added high collars join in on the same fabrication, with adjacent pieces sharing structural similarities though in a vast host of different styles. Tops elsewhere seem to opt for fabrications far distinct, however, with organic wools of blue dye taking shape in broad shoulder blazers and blends of Peruvian cotton and silk taffeta finding representation by way of military coats. Undeniably broad, the range then displays a series of light-washed denim in straight, retro fits, pairing it well with oversized, cropped blousons of enlarged lower compartments; hoodies layer underneath in cream, almost pink shades, somewhat matching a few pleated trousers whose strongest tweak to the classic form lies in its vertical slit at their lower front.
