The Wandering Wit Sets Out on an Imaginary Journey for AW20 Collection
Thanks in part to a season-long hiatus, The Wandering Wit was afforded many a nights’ worth of reflection. Autumn/Winter ‘20, the result of designer Gabriel Ting’s effort, culminates with as few words as “An Itinerary,” the title and theme to a range brimming with past favorites and new, travel-friendly garments.
“Fall/Winter 2020 is about a trip made based on my imagination,” Ting narrates. “Designed with the intention of portraying a list stemming from both personal reference and forethought. The story is told through a structure of someone setting on a journey. Starting from packing all the way up until the destination and everything in-between.”
Reflective of this “imaginary trip,” the garments strike a balance between both utility and comfort, the two often intersecting throughout the collection’s underlying storyline. The leisure of an overfit tee and the playfulness of tall, stripe-patterned caps start off a journey soon to require more rigid outerwear. And the range delivers just that in large variety, as the tops alone proffer favorites like the “U-Pocket” button-up and debut styles like the “Taped Notebook” shirt, a frame whose contrast taping emphasizes the journal-sized chest pocket.
Elsewhere, more universal references come into focus, each iterative of timeless pieces. For example, Ting introduces his take on the Type III trucker, upgrading it with melton and cashmere wool. In a similar vein, trousers are also adding further universality to the already extensive breadth, the signature “KIES” pant as effective in mustard herringbone as it is in grey pinstripe.
