Winter-Ready Footwear by Snow Peak and New Balance's Tokyo Design Studio
For the fifth time, Snow Peak has collaborated with New Balance Tokyo Design Studio to create a winter-ready sneaker-boot hybrid that can traverse snowy conditions: the TDS ‘Niobium Concept 3’.
What is essentially two shoes in one, the outer shell is made from eVent, a waterproof and breathable material, while the inner booty is made using Primaloft which is renowned for its excellent heat retention. As a result, when they are worn as a complete unit, the Niobium Concept 3 is a warm weather-proof system. The outer shell is finished in a white and grey snowfield-inspired colour, while the inner Primaloft booty features a graphic extracted from Kenji Miyazawa’s poem, ‘Ame Nimo Makezu’.
The boots utilise a sole unit that is inspired by the New Balance MT580, a popular trail running shoe from the 1990s that is characterised by its wide landing area and features ROLLBAR in the arch area to reduce over-pronation. In addition, for added traction and grip on snowy and uneven surfaces, they have opted for a Vibram outsole which also is incredibly durable.
The pair has developed a range of apparel to accompany the ‘TDS Niobium Concept 3’, including bottoms, longsleeve tops, accessories, down jackets and vests that mirror the design language of the shoes.
