meanswhile Autumn/Winter '21
meanswhile maintain their narrative of, ‘clothes as a tool’, as they unveil their Autumn/Winter ‘21 collection at Tokyo Fashion Week.
Naohiro Fujisaki founded meanswhile a mere 7 years ago in 2014 and has since solidified his position domestically, as well as overseas, having accumulated accolades to the brand and himself. For their Autumn/Winter ‘21 collection, meanswhile is committed to the belief that form follows function and, through each garment they design, they continue to explore the possibility that exists between these two and how boundaries can be pushed - functionality in more discrete ways, but optimal ways. Pictured on a beach with the sea as the backdrop, the slew of oversized and roomy silhouettes is noted, with bottoms arriving in wide cuts and outerwear giving off a bulkier and more aggressive look. Fujisaki’s namesake has consistently delivered when it comes to outerwear and this season is no different with sherpa-lined jackets, re-interpreted military flight jackets, multi-pocket vests and more traditional workwear-inspired staples forming the bulk offering. Of particular note is an orange two-piece whereby a detachable shawl is layered atop a puffer jacket, allowing the wearer customisation of their garment depending on the circumstance. Bottoms come in a selection of cuts from slim-tapered to baggy but, in some places are replete with zip detailing, contrasting stitching and materials. meanswhile’s reinterpretation of iconic outdoor styles comes in the form of a cream/beige fleece, a nod to the brand’s infatuation of outdoor, military and workwear silhouettes. Further staples in the collection include a variety of shirting options, hooded sweatshirts and headwear.
