Goodfight Creates a Refined Restaurant Uniform for Kato
After their most recent “Everyday Technology” launch, LA-based label Goodfight has teamed up with the local Michelin star restaurant Kato to build a custom staff uniform. “We were very excited to work with Kato when they approached us about designing custom uniforms for their new restaurant because as a business--and as four Asian Americans--we felt an enormous synergy between our brands that comes from a shared desire to execute at the highest level while utilizing our unique perspective as ‘Third Culture Kids.’"
This collaborative effort was truly a two-sided conversation that utilized inputs from Goodfight’s previous collections and chef-owner Jon’s own mixed-cultural background, which heavily influences his culinary direction. Captured by Emanuel Hahn, the outcome is a uniform that expresses storytelling elements of both brands while keeping a focus on functionality in the restaurant & kitchen. Japanese fabric with performance technology was sourced for the tops and American poly-cotton twill for the apron. Shirts featuring COOLMAX® broadcloth were tailored for a slim fit as a layering piece for staff working over an open flame or running back and forth between the kitchen and storage, while the chore coat incorporates Goodfight’s signature double collar design that represents the duality of Eastern and Western influences to both brands. Lastly, the apron worn by the kitchen staff were updated to be reversible so they could be flipped if stained. furnished with towel straps and silicone-tipped drawcords that are typically used on jiu jitsu gi’s for extra comfort & utility. A common theme across all the pieces is the cream color, a conscious choice to compliment the texture & tones of the space’s interior and to avoid traditional black uniforms that are more common in most Michelin star restaurants.
