ANITYA Spring/Summer 20
Composed of Buddhist beliefs yet not religiously so in its visuals, Japanese unisex label ANITYA crafts with effortless expression to their namesake, a Sanskrit term that roughly translates to “impermanence.” And while their previous collections have done well to envelop with these very motifs, SS20 sits as a minimal refinement, throwing timeless styles through a traditional filter of distinct origin in a tonality that’s far removed from the typical pastels frequently associated with the season.
None quite as straightforward as they seem, each garment strays from its respective template at every angle, with basics the likes of button-ups and sweatshirts circumventing their expectations by way of structural embellishments -- some (mostly the collared offerings) even dressing with simple patterns of thin stripes and windowpane. But while the hoodies cinch to three-quarters along their sleeves and tops open up by way of slits along their sides and back panel, outerwear bears a much more solid construction: the most unambiguous of the sort being the hooded overcoats in both dark and light neutrals. Adjacent pieces, colored with the same palette assortment, rethink Chinese shirting with its lace ties down the placket, cut lapel-less, one button blazers with a silhouette modifying slit right along the center torso, and even give oversized blousons contrast zips and metallic fasteners.
