yoshiokubo Autumn/Winter '20
Yoshio Kubo’s eponymous label took stage at Paris Fashion Week to showcase their modern day combat uniform, a bold take on garments inspired by traditional Japanese culture, meanwhile balancing the runway pieces with contemporary, tailored everyday wear.
Entitled “POISON IVY”, yoshiokubo captured eyes with their revival of Japanese heritage, using the combat armor as a reference and updating it with modern fabrics and construction. The nostalgic functional set piece visually emulates shielded armor used by warriors and samurai, maintaining elements of free movement with the paneling setup. Yet, they are crafted with a soft quilted fabric also utilized on face masks and helmets. Puffed down vests and duffel coats likewise act as modern-day armor, providing protection against the outdoor elements. Contrasting the all black outfit are white hooded coats and pleated trousers paired with a rainbow-colored scarf and paisley-patterned pullovers. Tailored blazers and boxy silhouette jackets with plaid patterns make up the tamer garments meant to be layered underneath the heavy-duty armor.
