visvim Takes a Deep Dive into their Hand Woven Fabrics

visvim’s latest dissertation series reveals the origins and traditional techniques employed to craft various striped fabrics and indigo dyed materials, highlighting the families and equipment used by the master craftsmen that have been passed down for generations.

The Buyi tribe from the southwest province of Guizhou, China, having kept the customs and practices of from ancient times, continue to hone their mastery of the roketsuzome, a traditional wax-resistant textile dyeing technique, and their hand embroidery skills. Their striped fabrics were manually weaved using spinning wheels and hand-turned looms, ultimately turning into their Jama Striped Pants and Eiger Sanction Shorts. Similarly, CEVIAN-ORI, a leading fabric company stationed in Japan, weaves weft yarns of thinly split Kurotani Washi paper for a durable, breathable, and anti-bacterial fabric. The red and white striped material is integrated into the highly sought after Thorson Albacore bomber jacket, specifically as the elbow pands.
