TOBIAS BIRK NIELSEN Spring/Summer '20
One half tangible commentary and the other personal vignette, TOBIAS BIRK NIELSEN’s Spring/Summer ‘20 collection uses clothing as a medium for self-expression. The eponymous label, who has used both video and stills to visualize their message, crafts an extremely solid and refined array of utilitarian garments that successfully bridges consumer habits with the designer’s own creative vision.
Entitled “COIL 50/1000,” the range explores a vast avenue of universal styles infused with a sense of personality that appears every so often by way of unique silhouettes, cuts, and fabrications. Interwoven throughout, there’s a large reliance on basics -- e.g. graphics tees, hoodies, etc. -- though each arrives tweaked in a manner unique to the overarching themes. Light cream bases as well as blacks and adjacent neutrals all refine the palette of such garments, creating a base for accenting strings, portraiture-heavy prints, and even layerable accessories. The latter, which takes the form of sling bags as well as vests, arm with compartments of varying size -- some making due with smaller, pocket-esque capacity while others opt for rucksack level utility. Moreover, outerwear seems to align near totally in aesthetic as the same tones and treatments stand out via various BDU-inspired jackets as well as thin yet weather resistant anoraks. Hats of bucket, beret, and cowl varieties then seamlessly pair quite well, rounding off the selection alongside the bottoms whose drop crotch shorts and skirts shapes are significantly more bold.
